Evolving: Beyond Change

Evolution is a process of constant change and transformation. And, it’s a process that we can either resist or learn to surf.

As I take a moment to reflect on this post today, December 30th, 2024, I can’t help but notice how this time of year inspires so many of us to think about the past year. We often look back at our accomplishments and the things we didn’t quite achieve. It’s a time when we feel a renewed sense of hope for the new year, dreaming of all the possibilities ahead and gathering the courage to go after our goals.

Change is a big theme around this time. We tend to assess what didn’t work in the past and think about how we can tweak our actions and mindset to stick to those New Year's resolutions. But let’s be real—change can sometimes come with a bit of baggage, like fears of failure or losing our comfort zones, and the pressure of high expectations. This can easily lead us to feel a bit pessimistic. But what if we flipped the script? Instead of letting fear of failure hold us back, we could use it as fuel to succeed! And instead of dreading that loss of comfort, we could view it as a chance for growth. Shifting our perspective can really brighten our outlook!

When we think about change, it’s natural to feel a bit dissatisfied with past behaviors and chase that ideal version of ourselves. But this journey can be tough, especially when we’re worried about letting ourselves down. As a coach, I want my clients to feel empowered, not weighed down by unrealistic expectations or the belief that they don’t measure up.

The alternative to change isn’t just standing still; deep down, we all crave progress and improvement. A more uplifting way to think about change is to see it as evolution. Evolution is all about the possibility of growth and transformation into something even better or simply different. Embracing this idea can bring a sense of reassurance and confidence, reminding us of our incredible potential to expand and evolve.

Evolving means enhancing who we are right now without the need to undervalue our present selves. I always encourage my clients to embrace their authentic selves because acceptance is such an important message. The word that resonates with me this year is still acceptance. But let’s be clear—acceptance doesn’t mean we’re settling or content with the way things are. For those of you who sense that there’s more to learn and explore, let’s make evolution our guiding principle, rather than just change. Remember, your current self is valuable and truly worthy of respect!

How do you approach transformation and growth in your personal and professional life?

Finding that balance between needing immediate change and valuing gradual progress can be tricky. I’d love to hear your thoughts and perspectives on this! Please share in the comments below!

Wishing you all a joyful and fulfilling new year ahead in 2025, filled with meaningful evolution!
